Details
Carl Regisford was the fifth child from a family of nine children. His father, David Jeshuran, and mother, Myrtle Beatrice, née Williams, were both born on the Island of St Vincent in the Grenadines, West Indies. His parents migrated to Curacao in search of a better life. Carl was born there in 1950 and in his childhood was exposed to several languages, Dutch and Spanish as well as English. His outstanding ability was evident throughout his school career which ended in St Vincent, to which his family had returned in 1960. In 1969 he was admitted to the University of the West Indies in Jamaica to study medicine, and at the end of his first year was awarded a scholarship by the university to complete his years at medical school. His pre-registration appointments were in the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia, and thereafter alternating postgraduate training appointments in Lusaka and London enabled him to pass his primary Fellowship in 1977, the Edinburgh Fellowship in 1980 and the final FRCS in 1984. Thereafter he specialised in orthopaedics, working first as consultant surgeon in Lusaka where he became postgraduate co-ordinator for the department of surgery. Finally returning to St Vincent in 1990 as consultant surgeon he built up a reputation as a wise and very able surgeon, devoted to the care and wellbeing of his fellow men, especially the African peoples. He was widely read, not only in medicine but also in literature and the classics, politics and philosophy. He was an outstanding sportsman, excelling in tennis and squash, and he proved an inspiring companion both on and off the playing field. His untimely death was a great loss to the profession, to his wide circle of friends and admirers, and to the community. He died on 17 October 1994, survived by his wife Margaret, née Williams, a nurse whom he married in 1978, and by his three children, Natasha, Kerwyn and Kashamba.
