Details
Tony Win was born in Burma on 23 May 1935. Very little is known about his family. He went to St Michael's School in Maymyo, Burma, and then attended St Albert's English High School in Maymyo, and Rangoon University. He studied at Rangoon Medical College, Burma, and qualified in Rangoon General Hospital in 1960. He came to Britain and in 1960 was a surgical house officer at the Lambeth Hospital, London, subsequently an SHO at Weston-super-Mare and then the Wanford Orthopaedic Hospital and the Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1965. From 1965 to 1967 he worked at Dover and Folkestone as an orthopaedic registrar and was appointed a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at South Shields in 1974, working there until 1993. He was married in July 1965 to Ann Blaydon, a nurse. They had two children, Peter, who is a trader in Thailand, and Justine, now a restaurateur in Tyne and Wear. As a young man he was interested in body building and won the title 'Mr Rangoon' in 1956 for his expertise. His major contribution to orthopaedic surgery was to design a clamp for osteotomy of the knee - the Win clamp. He died on 6 July 1995, survived by his wife and family.
