Details
Norman John Badham was a consultant at Leicester Royal Infirmary. He was born in Evesham, Worcestershire, on 10 November 1929. His father, Frederick Charles Badham, was a farmer and market gardener. His mother was Emily Rock. From Prince Henry's Grammar School in Evesham, Badham went up to King's College to read medicine. After junior posts at King's and the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital he joined the RAMC, where he was stationed at Tel El Kebir in Egypt. He later became a medical officer to the Royal Worcestershire Regiment. After National Service he specialised in ENT. He was a senior house officer at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, a registrar at Woolwich, and a senior registrar in Leicester and Sheffield. In 1964 he was appointed as a consultant at Leicester Royal Infirmary. There he was clinical tutor and examiner to the Leicester University Medical School. He also helped run the anatomy course. He held a number of positions on the Trent Regional Health Board, the Institute of Otology and the British Association of Audiological Surgeons. He was adviser in ENT to the Department of Health and Social Security from 1982 to 1991, and was on the Council of the Royal Society of Medicine, and an overseas examiner in ENT in Tripoli. He attended many overseas conferences, always accompanied by his sketchbook, for he was a talented artist. After he retired he continued to teach anatomy - his remarkable anatomical drawings were always widely admired. He married Georgina Eileen, a nurse, in 1954. They had one son, Guy, who became a software engineer. He died from sarcoidosis on 29 March 1998.
