Details
Herbert Nevile Burwell was a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Dewsbury and district group of hospitals. He was born in Leeds on 12 June 1920, one of three sons of Arthur Reginald Burwell, an insurance broker and Mabel Walker, née Robinson. His brother, R Geoffrey Burwell, was a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Nottingham, and his nephew, Matthew, became an orthopaedic surgeon in Bath. Educated at Leeds Grammar School, he studied medicine at Leeds under Macadam, Flint Broomhead and Pascoe Clark. After junior posts, he joined the RAFVR, being promoted to Wing-Commander. He was officer in charge of the surgical division in 1948. On demobilisation, he became a registrar to the Marguerite Hepton Children's Hospital, in Wetherby and, having passed the FRCS, returned as orthopaedic tutor to Leeds General Infirmary. He was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon to Dewsbury and district group of hospitals in 1955 and visiting consultant to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield. There he developed techniques for the rigid fixation and early mobilisation of fractures, which earned him an international reputation. Nevile was a keen amateur pilot, logging over 800 hours and flying to many European countries. In retirement he moved to Grange over Sands, where he could walk the Lakeland mountains and sail. In 1945 he married a nurse, Joan Freeman, and they had three sons, John, who was in the Police force, David, who became an oil executive and Christopher, who was a Group Captain in the RAF and was awarded the MBE. In 1980 he married Shirley Ledgard who was a medical social worker. He died from carcinoma of the prostate on 22 May 2000, survived by his wife, children and seven grandchildren
