Details
Peter Broad was a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Bournemouth and Poole. He was born on 24 July 1930, the son of Charles and Hilda, née Cook. He was educated at St Paul's School, London, and studied medicine at the Westminster Hospital, where he qualified in 1956. It was while he was in a junior post at Kingston Hospital, working for Douglas Freebody, that he became attracted to orthopaedics. He started his chosen speciality at Hammersmith Hospital under Charles Gray. He then moved to Heatherwood Hospital with George Arden, and later became a senior registrar at the Rowley Bristow with Alan Appley and Gordon Hadfield. In 1968 he was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Bournemouth and Poole. In an age when orthopaedic surgery seems to increasingly depend on high technology and instrumentation, it was refreshing to know someone like Peter, who would often say in theatre, "Don't worry, sister, I'll manage with that". The orthopaedic unit in the area was a happy one and colleagues had fond memories of division meetings held on Peter's yacht *Ankara*. After retirement he continued with medico-legal work, enjoying the combative atmosphere of the courtroom and revelling in verbal exchanges with counsel in his role as an expert witness. He married Pat Laird in 1959, when they were both working at Mile End Hospital in London. They had a son, Andrew, and two daughters, Katie and Rachel, one of whom became a doctor. He died on 13 March 1999.
