Details
Paul Stringer was born in London on 5 September 1914, the son of Richard Stringer and Sabina née FitzSimons. He was educated at Holloway County School and then read English language and literature at the University of Southampton, before going on to the Middlesex Hospital. There he won a prize for morbid anatomy and the Brackenbury certificate of merit. After qualification, he became a demonstrator in anatomy at the Middlesex and prosector at the College, before becoming a house surgeon. He joined the RAFVR in 1940, becoming acting Squadron Leader. After the war, he was surgical registrar at the Charing Cross and Westminster Hospitals, before being appointed consultant surgeon to St Alban's and Hemel Hempstead Hospitals. He was Chairman of the BMA mid Herts division in 1950. In 1947 he married Hazel Monk. They had one son and three daughters. Outside surgery he was a keen collector of antiques, and an active member of the Oxford Philosophical Society, being specially interested in linguistic philosophy. He published *Ethics and judgement in medicine and surgery* (London, Heinemann, 1970). He died on 6 June 1999, survived by his wife, children and five grandchildren.
