Details
Shelton Aloysius Cabraal was the father of neurosurgery in Sri Lanka. Having passed the fellowship in 1951, he returned to Colombo and, in 1956, founded the first neurosurgical unit in the country. State of the art for its time, it was located in the General Hospital. Initially the unit had 12 beds and it was here that most neurosurgical operations in Sri Lanka took place including pioneering skull base surgery. Three years later the unit expanded and took over the entire fourth floor of the building. A second neurosurgeon, Daivel Weinman, was appointed in 1962, having been Cabraal’s trainee. A keen bridge player, he was a member of the General Hospital’s bridge club. He died on 25 February 1996.
