His elder brother, Louis, who was the sixth son, also qualified in medicine and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians After primary education at Darley Street and Cowper Street Schools, he attended the City of Leeds School followed by Leeds University from which he graduated MB ChB in 1936. During house jobs at Leeds Infirmary and St James Hospital he was mentored by Ethelbert Rest Flint and Philip Rowland Allison. He then moved to London and worked at St Giles’ Hospital, Camberwell, and the Brompton – during these years he was influenced by Sir Clement Price Thomas, William Paton Cleland and Norman Rupert Barrett. During the second world war he served as a surgeon lieutenant commander in the RNVR. He passed the fellowship in 1948 and sometime after that moved to Australia passing his FRACS in 1956.
