Details
Eugene Poh Hwye Chu was a general surgeon in Hong Kong. He studied medicine at Melbourne University graduating in 1956 and doing house jobs at the Prince Henry Hospital. Having passed the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1959, he passed the college fellowship the following year. He returned to Hong Kong where he worked in the Baptist Hospital in Kowloon Tong and also ran a successful private practice at his Tsim Sha Tsui clinic for show business celebrities. Among his patients were the veteran singer Anders Nelsson and the Tiawanese actress Betty Ting Pei. It was at her flat in Kowloon that the kung fu icon Bruce Lee died in his sleep in 1973. Chu was called in to give assistance but never once spoke about the incident. He died of pancreatic cancer in Hong Kong on 10 August 2015 aged 84, survived by his son Philip.
