Details
Donald Campbell McKinnon was a surgeon in Wayville, South Australia. Born on 8 April 1933 in Adelaide, South Australia, he was the son of Robert McKinnon, a teacher, soldier and army educator and his wife Beatrice Ray née Edwards, also a teacher. His paternal great grandfather, Roderick, had been a farmer in Harris, Scotland before emigrating to Clare, South Australia. Alexander McKinnon, Donald’s grandfather, continued to farm in Clare and his five sons all worked on the farm keeping it going after their father’s death in order to pay their university fees. Educated at Westbourne Park Primary School and Unley High School in Netherby, he studied medicine at the University of Adelaide Medical School and graduated MB BS in 1957. In 1963 he passed the fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and in 1966 the fellowship of the college. From 1969 to 1976 he was a clinical assistant at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was on the board of the Western Community Hospital from 1969 to 1988 and then joined the board of the Onkaparinca District hospital in 1993. His wife, Judith, was a court reporter and legal secretary. They had three children; Anne, a nurse and physical education instructress, Jane, a paramedic working with the disabled and Rory, a musician and naval reservist. He enjoyed playing cricket and baseball (in which he had been an all Australian junior champion in 1950). Continuing the family interest in farming, he raised fine wool merino sheep and belted Galloway cattle. He also served as a squadron leader in the RAAF reserve. He died on 22 June 2015, aged 82.
