Prasert Sukhum was a surgeon in Bangkok, Thailand. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, qualified MB BS in 1959 and then specialised in surgery. He worked at various hospitals in the UK and gained his FRCS in 1967. He returned to Thailand, where he was a lecturer and assistant professor at the faculty of medicine, Mahidol University, Siriraj Hospital from 1967 to 1977. Between 1970 and 1974, Sukhum initiated and contributed towards the success of the rural medical development programmes within the less developed north eastern area of Thailand, specifically Udon Thani province. This included travelling to the area to perform surgery and to give medical guidance. In 1969, with colleagues who were also graduates of UK medical schools, he established Ploenchit Clinic in central Bangkok, one of Thailand's first private polyclinics. The clinic offered access to general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, as well as dentistry, with services provided by leading medical professionals in their fields. The founding partners of Ploenchit Clinic, including Sukhum, continued to contribute to the medical profession of Thailand as assistant professors and professors at medical schools. They also continued their private practice at the leading private hospitals in Thailand, including Prommitr Hospital, Bangkok General Hospital, Samitivej and Bumrungrad hospitals. The clinic was one of the leading polyclinics in Thailand from 1969 to 2006. Prasert Sukhum died on the 19 March 2015.
