Details
Edward John Carleton Wynne was a consultant surgeon at the Swindon and Cirencester Hospital. Born on 10 October 1926 in London, both his parents were medically qualified. His father Wilfred Edward Carlton Wynne was a consultant surgeon and his mother, Marjorie Frances née Sibthorpe, was a physician and surgeon. His paternal grandfather had practised as a GP in Dublin and married Miss Parke the matron of a Dublin Hospital. Three of her sisters ran a nursing home in Beaumont Street, Marylebone. After attending Fonthill Preparatory School in East Grinstead, Edward won an open scholarship to Epsom College where he became a school prefect and won his rugby colours for the first XV. He obtained an open exhibition to Trinity Hall Cambridge and studied medicine at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School. Initial house jobs were at St Andrew’s Hospital in Dollis Hill, the Middlesex, Southend General Hospital (working with Rodney Maingot), the United Norwich Hospitals (with Alan Birt and others). He passed the fellowship of the college in 1954 and took up a more senior post at the Middlesex where his mentors were Cecil Murray in general surgery, Sir Eric Riches and Richard Turner Warwick in urology, and Oswald Lloyd-Davies in proctology. Eventually he was appointed consultant surgeon at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon. He was secretary and chairman of the medical staff committee, a member of the Regional Committee for Hospital Medical Services, a founder member of the Oxford Regional Urology Club and instigator, founder member and secretary of the Wessex Regional Surgical Sub-Committee. When young he enjoyed sailing and excelled at skiing – he was invited to attend a trial for the 1948 Winter Olympics. Later pastimes were DIY and gardening. On 5 December 1953 he married Erica Louise Ferdinando and they had two children, Clare Louise who married a farmer and William John Sibthorpe Carleton who became a television producer. He died in February 2000 aged 73.
