Details
Martin Flood was a general surgeon in New South Wales, Australia. He was born on 21 November 1925 in Warren, New South Wales, Australia; his twin brother died at birth. Martin didn't start school until 1936, when he was 10, having been brought up, home schooled, on a big country farm. He completed his high school leaving certificate in 1942 at the Christian Brothers' High School in Lewisham, Sydney. He was placed 26th in the state, gaining a Commonwealth scholarship to study medicine at Sydney University. He qualified in 1950. In 1951, Martin married Gabrielle Hanrahan and worked in Tullamore, a New South Wales country town, as the local GP. He subsequently took his family to England to study surgery. In 1958, he obtained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a year later gained his fellowship of the English College. After returning to Australia, in 1960, he became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He worked as a senior general surgeon in Sydney, New South Wales, from his own private consulting rooms whilst operating at Hornsby Hospital, the Mater Misericordiae Hospital and the Sydney Adventist Hospital for approximately 40 years. Following his retirement from clinical work, he continued with his medico-legal practice until he finally retired at 81. Martin died on 20 October 2017 at the age of 91. He was survived by his widow Gabrielle, five children (Peter, Mary Anne, Gemma, John and Marty), 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
