Details
Kethieswaran Thuraisingham, known as Kethies, was a general surgeon in Campbelltown, New South Wales, Australia. Born in Karainagur, an island near Jaffna, Sri Lanka in the mid-1930’s, he was the son of Vethavally Thuraisingham, née Saravanamuthu, and her husband. He passed the fellowship of the college in 1964 and, ten years later, emigrated to Australia, working at various hospitals in Alice Springs, Darwin and Broken Hill before taking up a post as visiting medical officer to Campbelltown Hospital in 1978. During his 28 years there he was said to have made a huge contribution to the advancement of a new and developing hospital, pioneering surgical services and often serving as chairman of the department of surgery. He also found time to maintain a busy private practice. Outside medicine he was a keen traveller, a tennis player and an enthusiastic cricket supporter – apparently he insisted on having a ball by ball relay from the test match conveyed to the operating theatre while he was being scrubbed. A fan of new and expensive cars, it was said by one of his friends that he *changed cars as often as he changed suits*. He was married to Vadivambikai known as ‘Ambi’. When he died on 25 September 2016 aged 80, he was survived by his wife, three daughters and their husbands Sashie and Mohan, Menaka and Mahendra, Ramana and Imma and grandchildren Ashwini, Anjali, Vidya, Aran and Aidan.
