Edwin Carr was both a surgeon and a successful athlete. Born in Sydney on 2 September 1928, he was the son of Edwin ‘Slip’ Carr, a sprinter who represented Australia in the 1924 Paris Olympics and was a semi-finalist in the 100 meters. Edwin Junior was Australian 440 yard champion in 1949/50 and 1952 and a gold medallist in the 440 yards and the 4x440 yard relay at the British Empire Games in 1950. He competed in the 1952 summer Olympics in Helsinki, running in the 200 and 400 meters and both relays. He competed in the 1952 Oympics while continuing to study medicine at Sydney University. Passing the fellowship of the college in 1962, he also became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. From 1965 to 1984 he was visiting honorary surgeon at Blacktown Hospital in New South Wales and for many years operated at the Ingleburn Army Camp in Sydney. In 1970, during the Vietnam war, he did a tour of duty at the Australian field hospital in Vung Tàu. Throughout much of his career he was honorary medical officer for Athletics New South Wales. He died in Cowra on 25 March 2018 aged 89.
