Michael Cudmore Furnell was a surgeon general in the Indian Medical Service and the principal of Madras Medical College. He was born in Ireland in July 1829, the son of Samuel Furnell and Mary Maria Furnell née Cudmore, of Cork, and was baptised at St Andrew’s Catholic Church, Dublin. Educated

For a time practised at Randwick, West Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Subsequently he returned to Epsom, Surrey, and at the time of his death was living in Cavendish Road, St John's Wood, London, NW. He died in March, 1881.
