Came of an Oxford family, and was probably born in Oxford in the year 1802. His brother, George Parsons Hester, was a solicitor and was for many years Town Clerk of Oxford. James was a student at St Bartholomew's Hospital. He was admitted 'Chirurgus Privilegiatus' of the University of Oxford in June

Practised in Leeds, and died in retirement at 95 Gower Street, London, in September or October, 1867. Publications: Hare published several tracts on Spinal Curvature, also a Statistical Report of 190 Cases of Insanity at the Retreat near Leeds during 1830-40.

Was Surgeon to the Parochial Infirmary of St Luke's, Middlesex. He died at his house, 16 Artillery Place, Finsbury Square, on or before April 26th, 1854.

Was at one time Medical Officer to the Bloomsbury Dispensary. He died at his house, 3 Lamb's Conduit Place, Brunswick Square, on September 24th, 1855.

Practised in Burlington Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester. He was Surgeon to the Female Penitentiary and to Henshaw's Blind Asylum. He died at 242 Oxford Street, Manchester, in 1884.
