Details:
Born on 1 July 1892, son of John Henry Lloyd, and of Quaker stock, he was educated at Leighton Park School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was awarded a half-blue for running in 1914. For his clinical studies he went to St Bartholomew's Hospital and, on qualifying, he joined the Friends' Ambulance Unit in 1916 and later was commissioned as a temporary Surgeon, Royal Navy. Returning to St Bartholomew's after the war he spent three years in resident appointments and as a demonstrator of anatomy. In 1922 he was appointed clinical assistant at Great Ormond Street and thenceforward retained his connection with the hospital, first as house surgeon, then as resident medical superintendent, surgical registrar, and in 1926 surgeon to out-patients. In 1935 he became full surgeon, having taken over the orthopaedic department from Sir Thomas Fairbank in 1928. He was at one time registrar at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and chief assistant to R C Elmslie at St Bartholomew's. It was during this period that he visited the United States, Canada, and South Africa, where in 1926 he met and married Antoinette Marie Roux of Pretoria. From 1931 to 1952 he was orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Northern Hospital. During the war of 1939-45 he worked at Hill End Hospital with the orthopaedic department of St Bartholomew's Hospital. At the Royal Society of Medicine he was President of the Orthopaedic section and secretary of the Paediatric section. His Quaker ancestry and upbringing gave him a quiet and modest outlook on life, but he had a keen sense of humour and his integrity and kindness made him a natural peace maker. By his marriage to Antoinette Roux he had a son and a daughter and they survived him. He died on 26 November 1954 at Harpenden.
