Lynn Evans was born in Aberystwyth on 12 December 1920. His family were all connected with the University of Wales as both his parents, his brother and his two sisters studied there. His father, David Evans, became Professor of Modern Languages (German-Swedish) at Aberystwyth and his mother, Margaret, née James, studied French and became a teacher in that language. Lynn went to Ardwyn Grammar School and then to the University of Wales for his first MB. He continued at the University of Cardiff Medical School and during the course he obtained the University gold medal in surgery. He had been an exceptional student taking a BSc in anatomy, physiology and anthropology in 1942. He was also awarded the Cardiff Medical Society Prize. He did his house appointments at Cardiff and then moved away from his beloved Wales to London. At the Middlesex Hospital he held junior and senior registrar appointments, obtaining his FRCS in 1952. His thesis for the MD in 1957 was on the use of intramuscular iron in the treatment of anaemia. His interest lay, however, in gynaecology and he obtained the MRCOG in 1956. After a series of appointments at the Hammersmith, West Middlesex, Queen Charlotte's and St Thomas's Hospitals he was appointed as consultant gynaecologist to the then Chichester and Worthing Group of Hospitals. He also worked at the Zachary Merton Maternity Unit at Rustington. He played a leading part in the reorganisation and commissioning of the new ward block in St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, which was to house the gynaecology department and in the founding of the postgraduate medical centre. In 1970 he suffered a severe cardiac infarction but continued with modified work until 1982. Outside his work he had few interests but he had a sailing boat and enjoyed sea fishing. He took considerable pleasure in travel. He married Marjorie Sybil in 1947. They had a son Julian Lynn and two daughters Kathleen and Sian. Lynn Evans died on 19 August 1984 and was survived by his wife and children.
