Details:
Anders Langenskiöld was a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon in Helsinki, Finland. He was born in Helsinki in 1916. He wrote a doctoral thesis on electrophysiology under the Nobel laureate Ragnar Granit and worked in field hospitals during the war with the Soviet Union, before graduating in medicine from the University of Helsinki in 1943. His battlefield experience led him to take up surgery, at first as a general surgeon, and later to specialise in orthopaedics. He was the medical director and chief surgeon of the Orthopaedic Hospital of the Invalid Foundation in Helsinki from 1956 to 1968, where he founded the research laboratory, and made major contributions to the study of scoliosis, bone transplantation and skeletal problems of childhood. He was appointed Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 1968, and head of this department the following year. Among many honorary memberships he was an honorary Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association and was awarded the honorary Fellowship of our College in 1986. He enjoyed sailing in the Finnish archipelago in summer, and downhill skiing in the winter. He died on 8 July 2000, leaving his wife Kristina and three children.
