Details:
Peter Hugh Tasker was a general surgeon in Ontario, Canada. He was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, on 16 September 1916. His mother’s maiden name was Thomas. He qualified in 1940. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and, while attached to No 6 Commando, was awarded the Military Cross. His citation read: ‘On 10th June 1944 at Amfreville the Regimental Aid Post was subjected to heavy shelling and mortar fire, many direct hits being scored on the farm buildings in which it was situated. Captain Tasker throughout the shelling showed unflagging devotion to duty and personal disregard for danger even carrying out blood transfusions during the height of the shelling. One shell landed in the entrance to the stables, adjoining the Regimental Aid Post starting a petrol fire which trapped a wounded man within the stables. Captain Tasker dashed through the flames and carried out the wounded man having first looked and found all the other men in the stables were dead. At all times his example proved an inspiration to his men and stretcher-bearers, imbuing them with the same disregard for danger that he himself showed.’ Of his hospital posts, he was a house surgeon at the Royal Infirmary in Doncaster and a senior house surgeon at Hull Royal Infirmary. He was then a resident surgical officer to Clayton Hospital in Wakefield and subsequently a registrar to the professor of surgery at the General Infirmary, Leeds. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of the Leeds Medico-Chirurgical Society. He then went to Ontario, Canada, where he was a consultant surgeon and chief of staff at Sarnia General Hospital and a consultant at St Joseph’s Hospital, Sarnia. He was married to D Elizabeth Tasker. Peter Hugh Tasker died in June 2008. He was 91.
