Details:
Gordon Ormandy was a general surgeon in Adelaide, South Australia. He passed the fellowship of the college in 1960 and was appointed surgeon at a hospital in Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1964. Eleven years later, in 1975, he moved to Adelaide with his wife Joy and their four children. He retired in 2008. When he initially moved to Broken Hill he was invited to become the first president of St Patrick’s Race Club, a new club that was being formed to raise money for the upkeep of Catholic schools. The first meeting was a great success largely due to his contribution which involved flying oysters in from Sydney and persuading Guinness to provide the stout. It rapidly became an important annual in the racing calendar. He then became involved as a part owner of race horses and when one of his horses was injured took it to the hospital on a float where the x-ray team wheeled a machine outside to examine it. After they had moved to Adelaide, the Ormandys continued to return for the meetings for 50 years. After a long illness he died on 22 December 2017 aged 86. He was survived by Joy; his children and their partners Andrew and June, Chantelle and David, Peter and Louise, Siobhan, and his grandchildren; James, Sarah, Madeleine, Ash, Jemima, Adelaide, Freddie, Alfie, Georgina, Alice, Harry, Edward.
