Hujohn Ripman was a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in the Ipswich and East Suffolk area. He was born in London on 3 January 1918, the son of Christian Hugo Ripman, a physician who had trained at Guy's Hospital Medical School, and Freda Beatrice Ripman née Jacks, who had been a dance teacher. He was educated at St Peter's Preparatory School in Horsham, Sussex, and then Rugby School, where he was in the rugby, shooting and running first teams and won the 'Crick Run', a cross country running competition. Deciding on a career in medicine, he was a student at Guy's Hospital Medical School in the early years of the Second World War - before, during and after the Blitz. At Guy's he was taught and influenced by Ernest Cranmer Hughes, Constantine Lambrinudi, Arthur Hurst and John Ryle. From 1938 to 1939 he was a student demonstrator in anatomy and in 1941 served three months as an unqualified house surgeon to Sir Hedley Atkins. At Guy's he also won the treasurer's medal and prize for surgery. He qualified with the conjoint in October 1941, and then gained his diploma in obstetrics and gynaecology in June 1942 and his MB BS in October 1942. From 1942 to 1945 he served as a regimental medical officer to the second battalion, Irish Guards, and was with them as they advanced from the Normandy landings to Hamburg. He was subsequently posted to the RAMC depot as an instructor with the rank of major. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Croix de Guerre. After his military service, he returned to Guy's as a registrar and then a senior registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology to Arthur James McNair, Frank Cook, George Frederick Gibberd and John Blaikley. He was editor of *Guy's Hospital Gazette* from 1947 to 1950 and edited *Guy's Hospital 1725-1948* (London, Guy's Hospital Gazette Committee, 1951). In 1950 he was appointed to St Alfege's Hospital, Greenwich, as a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology. Two years later he moved to Ipswich and East Suffolk, where he stayed until his retirement from the NHS in 1983. He was a teacher and examiner for the Central Midwives Board, and from 1965 to 1982 a region adviser to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. From 1975 to 1976 he was president of Ipswich and District Clinical Society and from 1976 to 1979 president of the East Anglian Obstetric and Gynaecological Society. Outside medicine he enjoyed shooting and gardening, and was a member of the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club). He was chairman of the governors of Old Buckenham Hall Preparatory School in Ipswich from 1976 to 1991. He married Sarah Garnham in 1943 and they had one son, Giles Michael Armstrong. They divorced in 1950 and he subsequently married Joanna Elizabeth Maconchy (née Banks), with whom he had four sons, Jeremy Guy Christian, Jonathan Wynne, James Jervis Hugo and Justin Jolyon Peter. Hujohn Ripman died in 2010.
