Details
Educated at Charing Cross Hospital, and practised for nearly fifty years in Epsom, where he was Medical Officer of the Royal Medical Benevolent College, in the formation of which he took an active part. At the time of his death he had been for many years Divisional Surgeon of the Metropolitan Police as well as District Surgeon of the London and South-Western Railway. He was a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society. He died on May 1st, 1889. His end was distressing. On the day of his death he visited his patients, and was apparently in his usual health. On returning home in the afternoon he had a conversation with his gardener at his residence, The Shrubbery, and afterwards went to his room, where he was found, some time after, dead, with a note lying near from which it appeared that he had taken prussic acid. It seemed that an incapacity for work had oppressed his mind, but he had long passed the date at which most medical men retire from active practice.
