Details
Anant Narayan Kolgaonkar was a consultant general surgeon in East Africa. He was born on 13 January 1930 and studied medicine at the G S Medical College in Bombay, India, qualifying in 1951. He went to the UK, where he worked at Guy’s and Westminster hospitals and gained his FRCS in 1964. He then emigrated to Uganda, where he was a consultant surgeon at Mulago Hospital in Kampala and an honorary lecturer in surgery at Makerere Medical School. In 1968 he resigned from the Ministry of Health and joined Kilembe Copper Mines as a senior medical officer and consultant surgeon. In 1972 he went on leave with his family to the UK; amid the turmoil of Idi Amin’s regime, he found he could not return to Uganda. He lost everything he had worked for. He had family connections in Tanzania, so in 1973 he joined the Ministry of Health in Dar es Salaam. Three years later, having completed his contract with the government, he went into private practice in Tanga. When, in 1981, private practice was banned by the government, he joined an industrial group serving 2,000 workers as a senior consultant surgeon. He held this post until 1995, when he regained his property in Uganda. Kolgaonkar died on 12 July 1999 at the age of 69. He was survived by his wife and two sons, one of whom is Khalid.
