Details
Adrian Kenneth Lowe was born in Brighton, Victoria, Australia on 3 June 1928. His father Edward William Francis Lowe was a store guide and his mother Wilhemena née de Korte was a medical practitioner. After attending Firbank Preparatory School in Brighton, he moved to Brighton Grammar School, Wesley College and Scotch College. He studied medicine at Ormond College, Melbourne University graduating MB BS in 1955. From 1956 to 1957 he did house jobs at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and then travelled to the UK to work as surgical registrar in Winchester from 1962 for a year. In 1964 he passed the fellowship of the college and joined the staff of Manchester Royal Infirmary, where Robert Lord Holt became his mentor. He stayed there until 1965. On his return to Australia he was an anatomy tutor at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and surgical tutor at Ormond College from 1966 to 1967. He was then appointed a consultant general surgeon at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and during his time there was a surgical supervisor for the RACS. Also in 1967 he served with the Australian medical team on a mission to Vietnam, which was organised by Prince Henry’s Hospital, Melbourne. Outside medicine he enjoyed golf, tennis, skiing and, later, farming. He married Patricia Mary née Mildred, a fellow graduate of Melbourne University, on 3 April 1959 and they had two daughters Victoria and Vanessa (who became a teacher) and a son, Jonathan, who predeceased him. On 20 March 2017 he died aged 88 and was survived by his daughters and granddaughter Beatrix.
