Warwick John Cook was a consultant general surgeon at Liverpool Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales. He was born in Sydney on 3 July 1930. His father Marcus Cook was a service manager; his mother Hilda Maude Cook née Thame was a housewife. He had a sister, Nerida. He attended Sydney Boys’ High School from 1940 to 1946. He was a school prefect and graduated with prizes in chemistry and physics. He qualified in medicine at the University of Sydney in 1953. He went to the UK for surgical training and joined the St Thomas’ Hospital/Royal College of Surgeons of England training programme. He gained his fellowship in 1956 as well as the Hallett prize. He returned to Australia, where from 1958 to 1998 he was a general surgeon at the Liverpool Hospital in Sydney. In 1960 he became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. From 1966 to 1980 he was also a surgeon at St Joseph’s Hospital, Auburn and, from 1966 to 1976, a lecturer in clinical surgery at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. He was a voracious reader, an enthusiastic golfer, a world traveller ‘when time permits’ and a rugby fanatic. In December 1954 he married Nora June, a secretary. They had three children, Martin, Michael and Melanie, 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Warwick John Cook died on 25 January 2019. He was 88. A scholarship in medicine was established in his name at Western Sydney University.
