Subir Datta was born on 26 March 1963. He studied medicine at Calcutta University and graduated MB, BS in 1989. After travelling to the UK to complete his training, he joined the staff of St George’s Hospital in London. He passed the fellowship of the college in 1999. Most of his career was spent at Manchester Royal Infirmary where he was a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon. One of his most important achievements was to open a cardiothoracic surgical wound clinic at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which provided life saving assistance to postoperative patients. Interested in immunology and transplantation, he contributed to research on the complications of vacuum assisted closure therapy after cardiac surgery and heart failure management in cardiac surgical patients. He was still working when he contracted pancreatic cancer and died on 22 March 2021 aged 57 years, much missed by his patients and colleagues.
