John Gwynfor Evans – usually known as Gwyn or Gwynfor – was the son of Esmor Evans, a policeman, and his wife Alwena, a schoolteacher. He was born in Wrexham on 17 July 1956 and, when he was still young, the family moved to Old Colwyn. Educated at Ysgol Glan Clwyd, he studied medicine at London University and trained at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School graduating MB, BS in 1979. At medical school he shared a locker with the famous Wales rugby player and surgeon J P R Williams. After house jobs in Manchester and the North East, his career in surgery was curtailed by an attack of sarcoidosis which led to pulmonary fibrosis and severe osteoporosis. In spite of his illness he remained in good spirits and retrained as a GP, working initially in inner city Gateshead. While in Newcastle he also completed an LLB in 1991. Two years later he returned to Wales and settled in Gyffin in Conwy where he took over a one man practice covering the Conwy Valley. A popular and respected GP, the practice became very successful and he was able to convert a disused chapel into a modern medical facility, taking on various partners in the process. The efficiency of the practice was enhanced by the fact that he was a pioneer in the field of computerised medical records. Sadly his health problems recurred and he took early retirement in 2015. However he very much enjoyed continuing to work as a locum in the area even appearing on Welsh television during work at the Blaenau Festiniog surgery. He was also often to be found providing a medical viewpoint on Welsh radio and television. For many years he was chair of the local Conwy health group. A popular and sociable man, he took part in numerous local activities from playing the lead in the Christmas pantomime to winning prizes for his champion vegetables. A school governor and treasurer of the young farmer’s club, he was an enthusiastic student of Welsh language and history and also a skilled watercolourist. At St Mary’s he met Marie née Rapson, a nurse, they married in 1990 and had three children Siôn, Aled and Bethan. He died from pulmonary arterial hypertension, secondary to sarcoidosis on 12 November 2021 aged 65, survived by his wife, family and brother, Clwyd. His daughter Bethan is in training to follow in his footsteps as a GP.
