Details
Veronica (Vera) Gammon was a consultant ENT surgeon at East Glamorgan Hospital near Pontypridd, with outreach clinics at hospitals in the Rhondda valley. Vera was born in Merthyr Tydfil on 8 May 1925 to William Gammon, a teacher, and Ann Gammon née Davies. She attended the County Grammar School, Merthyr Tydfil, and studied medicine at the Royal Free Hospital from 1943 to 1948. Due to wartime bombing, Vera and others were transferred to Guy’s Hospital for anatomy classes, becoming its first female medical students. After completing her medical studies, Vera took up the post of house surgeon to G Barry at the Royal Free Hospital. She then pursued further surgical training at several hospitals, including Horton Hospital in Banbury, the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, and Bridgend General Hospital. Being a woman posed problems, but after her extensive experience across these institutions, Vera ultimately gained her appointment as a consultant at the East Glamorgan Hospital. In 1971she enhanced her otological skills by attending the Portmann course on functional otological microsurgery held at the Portmann Foundation, University of Bordeaux. She retired in 1984. Vera distinguished herself not only in her professional life, but also in her academic studies and extracurricular pursuits. From a young age, she excelled academically and was equally accomplished in sport, proving herself a talented athlete and swimmer. Her artistic abilities were equally impressive. Vera was a brilliant musician, demonstrating proficiency as a pianist, organist and singer. She made several recordings and was actively involved with the South Wales Organ Society, serving both as a member and later as its chairman. In addition to her musical and sporting talents, Vera was a gifted artist, particularly skilled in the art of miniatures. Her artistic work was recognised at a national level, with her miniatures being accepted by prestigious organisations such as the Hilliard Society of Miniature Art and the Limner Company. Vera never married. She died on 27 December 2021 at the grand age of 96 from bronchopneumonia with peripheral vascular disease.
