Details
Bryan Drury Markwell was a consultant oral and dental surgeon at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. He was born on 15 January 1926 in Hackney, London, the son of Leonard Cecil Markwell, a substation engineer who had served in the First World War, and Charlotte Markwell née Alcock. During the Second World War, Markwell was evacuated with his school, and then, in 1943, joined the Army and served in India, Tobruk and Benghazi in Libya, Palestine, Egypt and Aden. Following his demobilisation, he trained at the Royal Dental Hospital and then held a house officer post at St George’s Hospital, London. In 1961 he became a fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was a registrar at the Royal Northern Hospital and, in 1967, went to the United States on a lecture tour. On his return he was appointed as a consultant at Barts. He also held consultant posts at King Edward VII and St Mark’s hospitals and had a practice in Wimpole Street and then Harley Street. He was a governor of Barts and a freeman of the City of London. In 1956 he married Peggy Finch, a nurse. They had three children – Adam, Nick and Anna. Predeceased by his wife in 2010, Markwell died on 24 October 2016. He was 90.
