Leonard Raphael Ryder, known as Len, was a dental surgeon in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He was born in 1931 in Singapore, the son of John Ryder, an engineer, and Ruth Rebecca Ryder née Isaac. Initially sent to a boarding school in the UK, at the start of the Second World War he returned first to Singapore and was then sent to school in Australia. He attended Trinity Grammar School in Kew, Victoria from 1942 to 1948 and went on to study dentistry at the University of Melbourne, qualifying with a BDS in 1954. In 1955 he went to the UK for further training and gained his fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1959. He returned to Australia, to Melbourne, where he worked as a dental surgeon. Ryder died on 9 December 2013 in Melbourne at the age of 82. He was survived by his widow Eve, children Nick, Amy and Susie, and grandchildren Ben, Charlotte, Chloe, Lily, Madeleine and Poppy.
