Details
Harry William McFarlane was a consultant otorhinolaryngologist in Derby. He was born on 21 July 1929, in Broughty Ferry, Scotland, the son of Harry McFarlane and Anne Cramond McFarlane née Rew. He attended Grove Academy in Broughty Ferry. A strong swimmer, at school he was senior champion several times. He was well-known as a teenager for his single scull rowing and boat racing awards at Broughty Ferry Boat Club competitions. He later transferred to yacht and power boat racing, winning many competitions at the local yacht club. He studied medicine at the University of St Andrews and qualified in 1952. He was a house surgeon at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary from 1952 to 1953 and then returned to Scotland, where he was a casualty officer at Dundee Royal Infirmary, then a house physician, a senior house officer in surgery and a surgical registrar there. He was a demonstrator in anatomy and a lecturer in physiology at the University of St Andrews from 1956 to 1959. From 1959 to 1961 he was a surgical registrar for the Aberdeen Group of Hospitals. He then decided to specialise in ENT surgery, as a registrar and then a senior registrar in otorhinolaryngology at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. In 1965 he was appointed as a consultant otorhinolaryngologist for the Derby Group of Hospitals, as well as at the Royal School for the Deaf Derby. He was also a consultant to the British Army from 1979 to 1994 and was a member of the Territorial Army. He was also appointed as the Queen’s ENT surgeon. He gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1961 and was also a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 1960 he married Zlata Dzinovic. McFarlane died on 26 September 2024. He was 95.
