Kamla Rupchand Alimchandani was a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in Mumbai, India. She was born on 12 October 1927 in Dharwar, India. Her father, Rupchand Alimchandani, was a professor of chemistry. Her mother’s maiden name was Haribhai. Alimchandani studied medicine at the University of Bombay and qualified with an MB BS in 1951 and an MD in 1953. She went to the UK for further training and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1958. She was also a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists She returned to Bombay, where she was a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology and an assistant professor at the Grant Medical College. She worked at the Cama and Albless Hospital, the Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre and the National Hospital. She lived with her sister, brother-in-law and their children. Alimchandani died on 2 August 2015 at the age of 87.
