Details
Wendy Ellen Lewington was a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at the South London Hospital for Women. She was born on 13 April 1924 in Acton, London, the daughter of Gordon Rendell Lewington, a private secretary and later managing editor of *The British Steelmaker*, and Rose Lewington née Edwards, a schoolteacher. She gained a Middlesex scholarship to Notting Hill and Ealing High School at the age of 11. She took the first MB at school instead of the higher school certificate, as well as the London intercollegiate scholarship exam, which secured her a St Dunstan’s exhibition and a place at the London School of Medicine for Women. She qualified in 1946. She was a house surgeon and house physician at Taunton and Somerset Hospital, and then a house surgeon in the general surgical and orthopaedic departments at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. She went on to senior house officer appointments at York County Hospital and the Royal Surrey County Hospital. She held some locum surgical registrar posts before deciding to switch to obstetrics and gynaecology. From 1953 to 1955 she was a registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology at the West Middlesex Hospital, followed by a few months as a locum surgical registrar. From 1955 to 1956 she was a registrar at the Elizabeth Garett Anderson and Hampstead General hospitals. In 1956 she was appointed to a consultant post at the South London Hospital for Women, for four sessions. A year later, she also gained a consultant position at the Annie McCall Maternity Hospital, Stockwell, for one session, and in 1958 a consultant gynaecologist post at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, for two sessions. When the Annie McCall Hospital closed, the number of beds at the South London Hospital were raised and her sessions there were increased. She gained her fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1950 and of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1971. She enjoyed music, particularly opera. For 18 years she had a holiday flat in Montana, Switzerland, where she skied and walked. In retirement she played golf, gardened and played bridge. Lewington died on 13 December 2012 at the age of 88. She was single.
