Details
Anthony Mitra was a specialist in ENT surgery who spent much of his career as a consultant at Oldchurch Hospital, Romford. He was born in Worcester on 15 May 1933, the younger of two children of Janandra Mitra, an engineer, and his wife Winifred Mitra née Corbett. He was educated at Colston’s School, Bristol, before going on to study medicine at Birmingham University. There, he was appointed as a house surgeon to the surgical professorial unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. This was followed by posts in thoracic and general surgery, neurology and psychiatry. From 1957 to 1961 he was in the Army, where he was a member of the 45th Parachute Field Ambulance Division. Following a posting to Oldenburg in West Germany, he was given the post of regimental medical officer as a captain in the RAMC. He then went on to Hohne, where he held the post of medical officer of the 4th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery 7th Armoured Division. From 1963 to 1969 Anthony was a senior house officer at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, where he progressed to senior registrar on the professorial unit. In 1969 he was appointed as a part-time consultant in ENT surgery at Oldchurch Hospital, Romford, a post he held for many years. From 1972 to 1975 he attended cosmetic surgical training programmes in the USA, including in New York and Chicago, for face lift, eye lid and cosmetic nasal surgery. Further experience in cosmetic surgery was gained from his association with Ian Wilson, a consultant plastic surgeon at St George’s Hospital, where Anthony was invited to join him as a temporary honorary consultant in plastic surgery. Whilst holding this position, he was granted temporary leave of absence from his National Health Service appointment at Oldchurch Hospital. In 1976 Anthony established a private clinic in west Hampstead with two colleagues. He acquired a closed annex, formerly belonging to Moorfields Eye Hospital, in 1980. This became the Highgate Private Hospital, where he was surgical director from 1980 to 2003. Outside medicine, Anthony had many interests including shooting, fishing and golf. He enjoyed the company of his many friends and family and was known for his great sense of humour and above all his immense generosity; he supported many charities. He died on 31 January 2025 aged 91 from bronchial pneumonia and Parkinson’s. He was survived by his wife Maureen (née Reynolds), his three daughters and two sons, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
