Details
Chester Troy was a consultant general surgeon in Melbourne, Australia. He was born in Summer Hill, New South Wales, on 24 March 1932, the son of Bert Troy (formerly Trunkowski), a clothing manufacturer, and Ida Troy née Beresniakoff, a housewife. The family moved to Melbourne and Troy attended Scotch College from 1943 to 1949. He then studied medicine at Melbourne University, gaining his MB BS in 1956 with honours in obstetrics and gynaecology. He held junior posts in Melbourne and then went to London. He was a prosector in the department of anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons, a resident surgical officer at Royal Northern Hospital and a house surgeon at Hammersmith Hospital. In 1962 he had to return to Australia when his father became ill. He worked at the Repatriation Hospital in Heidelberg, and by 1967 was acting medical superintendent. He then returned to the UK, working his passage as a ship's surgeon on the *Port Invercargill*. The ship became stuck in the Suez Canal during the June 1967 Arab-Israeli war: Troy took notes on the Egyptian military movements and passed the information to the Israelis. Once in the UK he worked at Memorial Hospital, Darlington, Eastern General Hospital, Edinburgh, the West Middlesex Hospital and Grantham and Kesteven General Hospital. From 1970 to 1994 he was a consultant surgeon at Dandenong Hospital, Melbourne, and an honorary surgeon at Prince Henry's Hospital. He also served as a clinical teacher in the department of surgery, Monash University. He continued in private practice until June 2003. Outside medicine, he enjoyed golf, poker, bridge, reading, gourmet food, ballet, opera and music, and skied on ski slopes around the world. He was also interested in history, current affairs, politics and general knowledge. In 1966 he married Elizabeth Anne Johnston. They were divorced in 1985 and he spent the last 22 years of his life with his partner, Betty Marks. Chester Troy died on 16 January 2009 in Epworth Hospital, Melbourne. He was 76. He was survived by Betty and her children, Rick, Anita and Lisa.
