Details
Educated at the Grosvenor Place School and at St Mary's Hospital, of which he was the earliest pupil. At the time of his death he was Assistant Surgeon and Lecturer on Surgery at St Mary's Hospital, Surgeon to the Lock Hospital, and Consulting Surgeon to the St John's Wood and Portland Town Provident Dispensary. He was elected a member of the Board of Examiners in Anatomy and Physiology at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1875. He was for many years Dean of the Medical School at St Mary's, and in this and his other capacities he won the regard of all. He was a hard worker, a sound thinker, and an accomplished and trustworthy practitioner. His retiring nature, aversion from publicity, and avoidance of lucrative practice kept him strangely unknown. Yet he was "one of the most typically sound and skilful of the modern School of British Surgeons." He died of pleuropneumonia, having for two years previously suffered from severe attacks of haemoptysis, necessitating lengthened absences from England. His death occurred at his residence, 48 Queen Anne Street, Cavendish Square, W1, on January 23rd, 1876. He was at work to the last. At the time of his death he was a Fellow of the Royal Medico-Chirurgical Society, of which he had been secretary, and an honorary member of the Medical Society of Victoria. At a meeting held at St Mary's Hospital Medical School in March, 1876, it was decided to found a memorial in his memory, and on this occasion Messrs Samuel Lane, James Lane, Spencer Smith, and others testified to his sterling character and to his life-long work at the hospital as Curator of the Museum, Demonstrator, Surgeon, Lecturer, and Dean.
