Details
Born at Wolverley Hall, Shropshire, on November 21st, 1810; he was the fourth son of John Groom, and came of a very old Salop family formerly of Hardwicke Grange, the residence of the famous Lord Hill, one of Wellington's Generals, who died there. Thomas Groom was apprenticed to Dr Gwynne, of Wem, and completed his professional training at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals. He practised at Whitchurch, Salop, from 1834 onwards, and enjoyed a large and lucrative practice till his partial retirement a few years before his death. His wide circle of friends valued him for his cheerfulness and genial hospitality. He was a keen sportsman, an excellent shot, and in the forties, before the days of breech-loaders, once killed with one barrel thirty brace of partridges in a single forenoon. He died quietly at Whitchurch on October 7th, 1875, being then the senior medical practitioner in Shropshire, and within a few weeks of his eighty-sixth birthday. He married twice, but left no family.
