Details
The uncle of Abraham Kidd, MD, of Ballymena, Ireland. He received his professional training at Dublin and Edinburgh, and early in life entered the Royal Navy as Assistant Surgeon. He was soon promoted to the rank of Surgeon, and saw much active service for more than twenty years. His name is honourably mentioned in an Auckland paper, dated January 17th, 1846, by Colonel H Despard, to His Excellency Governor Gray; he was then Surgeon on board HMS *Castor*. On this occasion (an engagement with the rebel chiefs, Kawiti and Heke) he and Dr Pine were the senior medical officers among both naval and military, when a number of officers and men were either killed or wounded. Kidd was distinguished as a cool and steady operator, prompt in the treatment of disease and skillful in its diagnosis. He was beloved by his friends and brother officers. His death occurred at Melbourne on February 1st, 1852.
