Details
Born on July 20th, 1855, the son of Denis Leahy, civil engineer, London. He was educated at Charing Cross Hospital, afterwards studying at Vienna, Strasburg, and Paris. After acting as House Surgeon, Obstetric House Physician and Surgeon, and Medical Registrar at Charing Cross Hospital, and as Assistant Demonstrator of Anatomy in the Medical School, he was appointed Assistant Surgeon at Westminster Ophthalmic Hospital and Lecturer on Anatomy to the School of Medicine for Women. In 1882 he was placed first in the open competition for the Indian Medical Service, and was also Herbert Scholar and a Montefiore Surgical Prizeman at Netley. He entered the Indian Medical Service, Bengal, as Surgeon on September 30th, 1882, becoming Surgeon Major on September 30th, 1894, and Lieutenant-Colonel on September 30th, 1902. After two years' military employment to the close of 1884, and a short period as Surgeon to the Viceroy, Lord Dufferin, he entered the Political Department and served successively as Residency Surgeon at Kotah and at Baghdad and as Civil Surgeon at Quetta. He was transferred to Bengal about 1890 as Civil Surgeon of the 24th Parganas (Calcutta), and during the period 1890-1900 at different times acted in the Professorships of Anatomy, Surgery, Ophthalmic Surgery, and Materia Medica at the Calcutta Medical College. He accompanied the Shahzada, son of the Amir of Afghanistan, Abdur Rahman, on his visit to Europe in 1894. From 1901-1903 he was Civil Surgeon at Darjeeling. After his retirement on June 5th, 1903, he resided at 4 Iddesleigh Mansions, Caxton Street, SW, and died, after a long illness, on July 17th, 1917.
