Details
Born in Taunton, the son of Henry Liddon of that town, which is the home of the Liddon family. He was educated at Fallands under Mr G Rogers, and was the friend and fellow-pupil of the famous General Gordon. He was afterwards at King's College School, London - of which his cousin, Dean Liddon, had become a notable alumnus in 1841 - and in time he was entered as a student in the Medical Faculty of King's College. Here his career was one of distinction, and he was successively Assistant Demonstrator of Anatomy, Physician-Accoucheur's Assistant, and House Surgeon to the Hospital. After qualifying he studied ophthalmology for a year as Assistant under Sir William Bowman, and in 1859 joined his father in practice at Taunton, spending the rest of his life there. He gained a great reputation in Somersetshire as an accomplished surgeon, and as an operator who was at once brilliant, skilful, cool, and resourceful. He was early elected Surgeon to the Taunton and Somerset Hospital, and only resigned two months before his death. He was also at one time Surgeon to the County Gaol, and for several years surgeon to the 3rd Battalion of the Somerset Regiment. He was very popular, being kindly, courteous, and so unselfish that he hastened his end by overwork in the service of others. Moreover, he was a man of wide general culture. He was in failing health for some two years, but continued in active work till within a few months of his death, which occurred at Taunton on January 8th, 1893. His cousin, Dr Edward Liddon, of Taunton, was a contemporary.
