Details
Born on 31 December 1880 son of Albert Kisch MRCS who was in general practice for many years in Sunderland Avenue, and grandson of Joseph Kisch MRCS, an obstetric surgeon of 2 Circus Place, Finsbury, he was educated at the City of London School and St Thomas's where he qualified in 1904. He was Musgrove scholar 1901-2 and Cheselden medallist and prizeman in surgery in 1904, and afterwards held house appointments at St Thomas's. During the 1914-18 war he served with the British Red Cross and later with the RAMC, much of his service being spent in the Eastern Mediterranean and Salonika. After the war Kisch was appointed assistant surgeon and then surgeon to the Central London Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, where he gave devoted service for over forty years, and was also for many years surgeon in charge of the ear nose and throat department of University College Hospital, and surgeon to the ear nose and throat department of the London Jewish Hospital, to the School for Deaf Children and to the Concert Artistes' Association. Kisch took a great interest in postgraduate teaching and impressed upon his students the value of a sound training and general experience before specialisation. Kisch was a forceful personality, with a progressive outlook; he was blunt and outspoken, but beneath the gruff exterior was kind and considerate. He was President of the Section of Otology at the RSM and a vice-president of the Section of Laryngology. In 1919 he married Sybil Hyman; there were no children. He died on 31 July 1959 at the age of 78.
