Born in 1907 and educated at the Otago Boys' High School he entered the Medical School of Otago University in 1925, qualifying in 1930. After two years as house surgeon at Christchurch Hospital he proceeded to England, and after house appointments at Manor House, St Bartholomew's and Guy's Hospitals gained his Fellowship in 1935. After this he spent a year as Resident Surgical Officer at the Royal Hampshire Hospital, Winchester, and returning to New Zealand in 1937 assumed the superin¬tendency of Stratford Hospital. In 1944 he was appointed Medical Superintendent of the Hawera Hospital. In 1950 the six northern hospital boards were amalgamated to form the Northland Hospital Board based on Whangarei, and Lambert was appointed as the Board's Superintendent-in-Chief in 1952. Though shy and retiring by nature, he was meticulously conscientious and made a great success of a difficult and frustrating assignment. In his leisure he played cricket and was a keen chess player, rotarian and freemason. He died on 23 February 1961 aged 53 in Auckland Hospital, survived by his wife and two sons.
