He was educated at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1910. Coming to England for postgraduate study, he worked at St George's Hospital, took the Fellowship in 1915, and saw active service in the RAMC during the first world war. Returning to Sydney he became surgeon to the Royal Prince Alfred, the Ryde District and the North Shore Hospitals. He was a foundation Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and a member of its Council. He was President of the New South Wales branch of the British Medical Association in 1938, and during the second world war was visiting surgeon to the Army General Hospital at Concord, 1944-47. He was President of the Medical Defence Union of Australia 1945-58, and a member of the NSW State Cancer Council. He was created CBE in 1957 and a Knight Bachelor in 1958.
