Details
Bone 2 September 1897 at Sydney, he was educated at Brisbane Grammar School and St Andrew's College, Sydney, and had a distinguished career at the University of Sydney scholastically and as an athlete and boxer. After serving as resident medical officer at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney 1921-22, he came to England and made postgraduate studies at the Middlesex and Guy's Hospitals. He held resident posts at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (1924) and St Peter's Hospital (1925), and then returned to Brisbane. From 1926 to 1940 he was in general practice, in partnership with R A Meeks in South Brisbane, and then moved to Wickham Terrace and specialised as a consultant surgeon. He was assistant surgeon to the Mater Misericordiae Hospital for thirteen years, and at the time of this death was senior surgeon to the Brisbane Hospital. Ill-health prevented him from going on active service in 1939, though serving as a Major in the Australian Army Medical Corps, but he took a full share of wartime activities at home and was a trustee of the Queensland Medical War Benefit Fund. He served on the Queensland branch council of the British Medical Association from 1942 to 1948. Geaney married Edith Margaret Barlow in 1925. He died at Baroona, Brisbane on 13 February 1951, in his early fifties, survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter; one of the sons Bruce Geaney is a Fellow of the College. There is a portrait-photograph at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
