Details
Philip Goldstein was a general surgeon in Manitoba, Canada. He was born in Sawin, Poland, the son of Joseph Goldstein, a rabbi, and Chana Rivka Goldstein née Justman. He moved to Saskatchewan, Canada, at the age of 14 and, despite not knowing English upon his arrival, graduated from high school four years later. He earned a governor general's medal, which at that time was awarded to the top student in each province. As an undergraduate he attended the University of Saskatchewan and then studied medicine at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. At Queen's University, Phil was a member of the Officers' Training Corps and, following graduation, he enlisted and served overseas during the Second World War as a medical officer with the French-Canadian Royal 22nd Regiment, known as 'The Van Doos'. After the war, he returned to Canada and practised medicine in Benito, Manitoba. From 1951 to 1956, he completed further training in England, gaining his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and of England. He was respected by the medical community for his diagnostic skills and technical expertise, and by his patients for his dedication to their health and his quiet and calming manner. He was also a gifted teacher: throughout most of his career he was an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Manitoba. After his retirement from surgery, he worked part-time for a number of years as a medical officer for the Department of Veteran Affairs. He visited Israel many times and volunteered as a battle triage surgeon during the Six Day War. He met Edah when he was 18. They married in 1937 and had two daughters, Ricky and Evelyn. Predeceased by his wife and a granddaughter, Philip Goldstein died on 2 July 2007, aged 92. He was survived by his daughters, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. An excellent physician and surgeon, loyal friend and respected member of the community, Philip Goldstein was also a role model to his entire family. To everyone who knew him, he was truly a gentle man.
