Details
Born at Gillingham, Kent, on 5 December 1919, Edwin Charles Gibson received his early education at King Edward VI School, Southampton, and from there won a scholarship to Charing Cross Hospital where he graduated MRCS LRCP in 1943. Following a period of residency at the Royal South Hants and Southampton Hospital, he entered the RAMC and served in the Italian and Greek theatres of war; during the latter period he picked up an acquaintance with the language which was to prove very useful during his later years of practice. At the time of discharge he had reached the rank of Major. He returned to Southampton as registrar and he continued there until he obtained his English Fellowship in 1952. From this time he held a series of appointments at Bradford Royal Infirmary, St Peter and St Paul's and St Mark's Hospitals. Also during this period he held an appointment as research fellow at the Institute of Urology where he was involved in the study of carcinoma of the prostate and treatment by hormone therapy and adrenalectomy. At the same time he made contributions to the *Journal of urology* and the *Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine*. Early in 1955 he went to Australia to practice at Broken Hill. Eventually he confined his practice to that of consultant surgeon and was appointed honorary consultant surgeon to the Broken Hill and District Hospital. The surgical activity in this post was great, but he also lectured to nurses and became President of the local branch of the Australian Medical Association. In 1970 he suffered a severe myocardial infarction and was forced to reduce his load of work; he moved to Adelaide to a less demanding surgical life. Finally he decided to return to the United Kingdom and to settle at Rochester, Kent. He was married and had two sons and three daughters; his wife was also his partner in medical practice. He died suddenly at Rochester on 25 June 1974.
