Details
Born on 24 September 1881 at Watford, Ontario, Edwin Algernon was the son of Neville James Lindsay, a pioneer doctor who was the first Canadian Government Physician to the Blackfoot, Stony and Sarcee Indians. As a boy of four he saw the driving of the 'last spike' of the Canadian Pacific Railway. After graduating BA at McGill in 1902, he went to London and studied medicine at University College and the Middlesex Hospital where he qualified in 1908. He was a Captain in the RAMC with the British Expeditionary Force in France in the first world war and returning to London obtained his FRCS in 1920. At one time assistant consultant surgeon in orthopaedics to Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital, Alton, and to Queen Mary's Hospital, Stratford, he was for many years consultant to the Miller General Hospital, Greenwich, and St James's, Balham. Even after retirement he continued to do locum appointments in orthopaedics attending his last out-patient clinic on his 94th birthday. Much loved by patients and staff, he is remembered especially for his reassuring presence at the Miller General Hospital during the blitz in the second world war. He always wore a winged collar and usually a tiepin with a nugget of Yukon gold. He was happily married but had no children. His wife died in 1968, and he died on 3 February 1981.
