George Pitt was born in Marylebone, London, on 17 July 1898, the third child and elder son of George Newton Pitt, MD, FRCP, and Jane Elizabeth Heriot, a banker's daughter. After education at Leas Court, Folkestone, and Highgate School he served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery from 1916 to 1919. On demobilisation he entered Guy's Hospital Medical School. After qualifying he served as a house surgeon and resident obstetric officer at Guy's, and was then resident surgical officer at Exeter before taking the FRCS. Of the surgeons who were most helpful to him at Guy's he especially named Phillip Turner, Frank Cook and S S Slesinger. Unfortunately the record he sent to the College mentions only that he was later county surgeon to the St John Ambulance Brigade and it must be presumed that his working life was spent largely in general practice. His hobbies were gardening and the study of Shakespeare. In 1940 he married a member of the Cecil family and his wife was a grand-daughter of the former prime minister, Lord Salisbury. There were no children of the marriage and he died on 15 October 1979.
